چکیده

Time-dependent shear stress versus shear rate, constitutive curve, and velocity profile measurements are reported in entangled polymer solutions during start-up of steady shear flow. By combining confocal microscopy and particle image velocimetry (PIV), we determine the time-dependent velocity profile in polybutadiene and polystyrene solutions seeded with fluorescent 150 nm silica and 7.5 μm melamine particles. By comparing these profiles with time-dependent constitutive curves obtained from experiment and theory, we explore the connection between transient nonmonotonic regions in the constitutive curve for an entangled polymer and its susceptibility to unstable flow by shear banding [Adams et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2009, 102, 067801-4]. Surprisingly, we find that even polymer systems which exhibit transient, nonmonotonic shear stress-shear rate relationships in bulk rheology experiments manifest time-dependent velocity profiles that are decidedly linear and show no evidence of unstable flow. We also report that interfacial slip plays an important role in the steady shear flow behavior of entangled polymers at shear rates above the reciprocal terminal relaxation time but has little, if any, effect on the shape of the

Multiple Shear-Banding Transitions for a Model of Wormlike Micellar Solutions

Wormlike micelles are long wormy cylindrical aggregates of surfactants, self-assembled within a solvent, which entangle and continuously break and reform at thermal equilibrium. Rheological characterization and flow visualization experiments with micellar solutions show that under steady state shearing flow the deformation field may not remain homogeneous but instead spatially localize, resulti...

Transient shear banding in entangled polymers: A study using the Rolie-Poly model

Spatially inhomogeneous shear flow occurs in entangled polymer solutions, both as steady state shear banding and transiently after a large step strain or during startup to a steady uniform shear rate. Theoretically, steady state shear banding is a hallmark of models with a nonmonotonic constitutive relation between total shear stress and applied shear rate, but transient banding is sometimes se...

Yieldlike constitutive transition in shear flow of entangled polymeric fluids.

We describe an unexpected constitutive transition in entangled polymer solutions. At and beyond a critical stress, the initial spatially homogeneous and well-entangled sample transforms from its entangled (coiled) state into a fully disentangled (stretched) state over a period during which the resulting shear rate increases in a spatially inhomogeneous fashion. In the mode of controlled shear r...

Prediction of multiple overshoots in shear stress during fast flows of bidisperse polymer melts

We present a differential constitutive model of stress relaxation in polydisperse linear polymer melts and solutions that contains contributions from reptation, contour-length fluctuations, and chain stretching. The predictions of the model during fast start-up and steady shear flows of polymer melts are in accord with experimental observations. Moreover, in accordance with reported experimenta...
